ScreenCraft: King of Customization

Inspiration

As longtime fans of mobile customization, we've always been captivated by the beautiful and unique homescreen setups people share on social media. Our inspiration for ScreenCraft came directly from the frustration that followed: we'd find an amazing design but would have to spend hours hunting down the specific wallpaper, icon pack, and widget files. It was a fragmented and tedious process.

We realized there was no central hub for this vibrant community—a place to not only discover new ideas but to get all the necessary assets in one click. We envisioned an app that would empower creativity by making personalization seamless and fun. That vision is ScreenCraft.

What it does

ScreenCraft is an all-in-one platform for personalization enthusiasts, wrapped in a stunning Liquid Glass UI inspired by iOS. We're proud to bring this fluid, translucent, and modern aesthetic to Android for the first time, creating a truly premium user experience.

The app is built on three core pillars:

  • Setups: A community-driven feed where users can discover and share homescreen setups. Each post is a complete package, providing direct links to every required asset—wallpapers, icon packs, widgets, and launcher details.
  • Wallpapers: A curated, exclusive gallery of high-resolution wallpapers to give any device a unique backdrop.
  • Mockups: A powerful studio tool for creators. Users can beautifully showcase their homescreen designs or other products using professional, high-resolution mobile, laptop, and desktop mockups. This turns a simple screenshot into a presentation-ready asset.

How we built it

The backbone of ScreenCraft is a REST API built with Laravel, supported by a robust and scalable database schema for personalization content, social interactions, and media management.

Key architectural decisions include:

  • Polymorphic Relationships for a clean and scalable database design.
  • OneSignal for Push Notifications to instantly connect with users.
  • API-First Design, ensuring flexibility for mobile and web clients.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing an efficient real-time notification system.

When a popular user creates a new post, the app needs to instantly notify thousands of their followers. A naive approach would be slow and resource-intensive.

Solution:
We implemented a "fan-out" notification logic with background job processing, ensuring that notifications reach followers instantly while heavy work happens behind the scenes.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Notification system that transforms the app into a living, breathing community.
  • Flexible architecture that allows adding new features without major refactoring.
  • Mockup feature that goes beyond mobile to include laptop and desktop frames, making it valuable for digital creators.
  • Design innovation with a Liquid Glass UI, one of the first apps on Android to introduce this aesthetic.

What we learned

  • The importance of planning for scale from day one.
  • How flexible database structures can grow without major refactoring.
  • The value of background job processing for responsive, real-time experiences.
  • That a thriving social app is built on real-time interactions as much as features.

What's next for ScreenCraft: King of Customization

With the frontend app developed and RevenueCat fully integrated, our next steps are focused on growth and innovation:

  1. Expand our asset libraries with more exclusive wallpapers, icon packs, and widgets.
  2. Introduce user-curated Collections to make discovery more personalized.
  3. Add richer social features such as comments, reactions, and following improvements.
  4. Roll out more advanced mockup templates for creators.
  5. Continuously refine the Liquid Glass UI to push the boundaries of Android design.
