Inspiration
With our shortening attention spans, it's easy to get bored on long trips without Wi-Fi. On plane rides, car rides, or while waiting in line, have you ever wished you could be scrolling instead? Now, there's a way to keep people engaged the entire trip.
What it does
Scravel pre-downloads short form content, books, and travel articles for viewing offline. Just search for a topic or destination, and you can watch or read about it on the way there. With an easy-to-use user interface, these reels, novels, and articles provide content for all ages and interests, balancing relaxation with learning.
How we built it
We used Python to build the programs to download and display the content, using Invidious API to download Youtube Shorts. The user interface was designed using Figma and integrated with the Python code.
Challenges we ran into
Having picked up Figma for the first time this weekend, we were initially stumped by how to integrate our Python code with the Figma interface, since Figma doesn't run Python directly. In the coding process, we also ran into challenges displaying the audio for the short videos, not to mention the Invidious API server outage just an hour before submission. Our weekend had no shortage of unexpected situations, but with patience and determination, we all pushed the limits to create the prototype for Scravel.
Accomplishments that we're proud of + What we learned
Despite most of our team consisting of beginners to programming, we went beyond what we thought we were capable of. We created a user interface with Figma while learning it for the first time, and self-learned more Python using online sources to create more complex programs than some of us had ever made.
What's next for Scravel
Scravel is a revolutionizing technology for travel. Not only does it banish boredom without Wi-Fi, it can have greater impacts including improving cultural literacy through content related to the destination, improving accessibility for those without international data plans or in remote locations, and lowering carbon footprint by cutting down Internet use.
