Inspiration

Scrapyard Siege was inspired by games such as Gear Defenders and Raid Rush and the idea of turning mechanical systems into the core gameplay experience. Rather than focusing on traditional resource gathering or menu-based upgrades, the game centers around building, connecting, and upgrading a network of gears that directly power defensive structures. The goal was to create a mobile strategy game where every placement decision matters and where players can visually see their machine becoming more powerful over time.

Visually, the game draws inspiration from industrial scrapyards, heavy machinery, construction equipment, and retro-futuristic robots. Mountains of scrap metal, rusted steel, exposed gears, and salvaged technology create a world that feels rugged and believable while remaining colorful and approachable. Enemy robots use distinct silhouettes and accent colors to make them instantly recognizable, while turrets and gears feature bold shapes and strong visual readability designed specifically for mobile screens.

What it does

Scrapyard Siege is a portrait-oriented mobile tower defense game where players defend a junkyard wall against waves of invading robots. Players purchase, place, connect, and merge gears to power defensive turrets, creating a machine-like network that becomes stronger over time. As waves increase in difficulty, players must carefully manage gear placement, upgrade paths, and turret efficiency to survive.

The game combines tower defense, gear-based progression, and strategic positioning into a simple but rewarding gameplay loop. Players earn scrap, improve their machine, and attempt to survive increasingly difficult enemy waves and powerful boss encounters.

How we built it

The game was designed around a gear-driven progression system where upgrades happen directly on the battlefield rather than through traditional menus. We created a portrait mobile layout that separates combat, gear management, and purchasing into clearly defined areas that are easy to understand and interact with on a phone.

The visual style was developed using stylized 3D robots, industrial turrets, and scrapyard environments with strong silhouettes and color coding to maximize readability. The design process focused on ensuring that enemies, gears, and defenses could be quickly identified even during intense gameplay.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was creating a gameplay system that felt unique while still being easy to understand. Many tower defense games rely heavily on menus and upgrade trees, but integrating upgrades directly into gameplay through gear placement required careful iteration.

Another challenge was balancing visual complexity with readability. Because the game contains robots, turrets, gears, projectiles, and environmental details on a mobile screen, every element needed to be distinct and recognizable without creating visual clutter.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a unique gameplay concept that combines tower defense mechanics with a physical gear network that players can build and optimize. The gear system creates satisfying progression while remaining easy to learn and visually engaging.

We are also proud of the game's visual identity. The combination of scrapyard environments, colorful robots, industrial machinery, and mechanical themes creates a cohesive world that feels distinct from other mobile tower defense games.

What we learned

Throughout development we learned the importance of visual clarity in mobile game design. Strong silhouettes, limited color palettes, and clear player feedback are essential for maintaining readability during gameplay.

We also learned that simple mechanics can create surprising depth when combined effectively. The interaction between gear placement, gear merging, and turret power creates meaningful strategic decisions without requiring overly complicated systems.

What's next for Scrapyard Siege

Future development will focus on expanding the core gameplay with additional turrets, gear types, enemy variations, boss encounters, and progression systems. New environments, challenges, and unlockable content will provide players with more opportunities to experiment with different strategies and machine layouts.

Long-term goals include permanent progression systems, additional game modes, leaderboards, achievements, and expanded customization options. The vision is to continue building on the core gear-based gameplay while preserving the accessibility and readability that define Scrapyard Siege.
