Inspiration
Every day, households and businesses generate recyclable waste, yet the scrap collection process remains largely unorganized. Many people struggle to find reliable scrap collectors, while recyclable materials often end up in landfills instead of being reused. I wanted to build a solution that simplifies scrap collection, encourages responsible recycling, and supports the vision of cleaner and smarter cities through technology.
What it does
ScrapSmart is a smart scrap collection platform that connects users with nearby scrap collectors through a simple and intuitive interface. Users can schedule scrap pickups, categorize recyclable materials, track pickup status, and manage their recycling requests in one place.
The platform also showcases AI-powered concepts such as scrap identification, an intelligent recycling assistant, estimated scrap value, and live pickup tracking to demonstrate how technology can improve waste management and promote sustainable living.
How we built it
I built ScrapSmart as a responsive single-page web application using HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript in Visual Studio Code. I designed the user interface with custom CSS to create a clean and modern experience, while JavaScript powers the application's interactive features such as booking requests, pickup status updates, the AI scanner prototype, and the recycling assistant.
I used Git and GitHub for version control throughout the development process.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing a solution that could serve multiple users—including households, businesses, and scrap collectors—while keeping the interface simple and intuitive. Another challenge was deciding how to demonstrate AI-powered features within a limited hackathon timeframe, so I focused on building a realistic prototype that clearly communicates the product's vision and future potential.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of transforming a real-world environmental problem into a working prototype with a complete user journey. From booking a pickup to tracking requests and demonstrating AI-powered recycling features, ScrapSmart provides a clear vision of how technology can simplify waste management.
I'm also proud of designing a modern, user-friendly interface that makes the platform easy to understand and enjoyable to use.
What we learned
This project helped me better understand how software can be used to solve real-world sustainability challenges. I improved my frontend development skills, strengthened my understanding of user experience design, and learned the importance of planning scalable solutions even when building a prototype.
I also gained valuable experience using Git and GitHub to manage a project and presenting ideas through a product-focused approach rather than simply writing code.
What's next for ScrapSmart
The next step is to transform ScrapSmart into a fully functional platform by integrating Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Google Maps API, and AI-powered image recognition for automatic scrap classification. I also plan to introduce real-time collector tracking, dynamic scrap price estimation, eco-reward points, recycling analytics, and partnerships with local recycling centers to create a complete smart recycling ecosystem for sustainable cities.
