Inspiration
The rise of AI has birthed a new era of "ghost listings." Scammers now use AI-generated imagery and hijacked data to create too-good-to-be-true rental listings, defrauding potential renters of application fees and deposits. We built Scout to give power back to the renter by providing an automated, AI-driven private investigator.
What it does
Scout is a verification engine that unfurls any rental URL to cross-reference its claims against reality. By analyzing tax records through the ATTOM 1Data API, comparing listing photos against Google Street View using visual AI, and flagging predatory pricing with neighborhood market data, Scout provides a definitive "Trust Score" for every home.
How we built it
Scout is a verification engine that "unfurls" any rental URL to cross-reference its claims against public and historical records. By analyzing tax records through the ATTOM 1Data API, Scout calculates a definitive "Trust Score." This allows users to browse with confidence, knowing which homes are legitimate and which are digital traps.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest hurdles was navigating through major real estate platforms like Zillow, which use aggressive anti-scraping measures. We had to pivot our data collection strategy several times to ensure we could extract listing details without being blocked. This taught us how to build more resilient web crawlers and the importance of finding ethical, reliable data workarounds.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are particularly proud of our user-friendly UI, which simplifies complex investigative data into an easy-to-read dashboard. While the backend performs heavy lifting, cross-referencing tax IDs and analyzing metadata, the user experiences a seamless interface that provides clarity at a glance. Transforming a technical verification process into a consumer-ready tool was our most rewarding achievement.
What we learned
We learned the hard way to thoroughly vet API functionality and rate limits before building them into the core architecture. It’s clear that data accessibility can change in an instant, so staying flexible and having a "Plan B" is non-negotiable. This process really opened our eyes to how scammers exploit data gaps, making us even more certain that Scout needs to exist.
What's next for Scout: Verify Your Real Estate
The next phase for Scout involves expanding our support to a wider variety of real estate websites and international markets. We also plan to implement a "reverse listing search" feature that helps users find the original, legitimate post for a property if it has been hijacked. Our goal is to become the standard security layer for every online rental search.
