Inspiration
Our team of Finnish students kept missing hackathons, competitions and fellowships, or finding them after the deadline. We wanted one place that finds them all and tells us which are worth our time.
What it does
Scout reads 30+ sources every 6 hours (Devpost, MLH, Luma, CTFtime, plus a curated list of competitions and fellowships), merges duplicates and ranks every opportunity for our team: expected prize value, chance to win, theme fit, hours needed, age limits and eligibility. It shows exact deadlines in our time zone, explains how each score adds up, and sends reminders for starred items.
How we built it
TypeScript and Node.js with SQLite, Playwright for pages that need a browser, and a plain HTML/CSS/JS web app. Almost all of it was built by directing AI coding agents (Claude Code).
Challenges we ran into
Listings give inconsistent dates and time zones; some only give the day. Scout now reads exact deadlines from event pages and marks the ones it can't confirm.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It runs every day on our home server and already found events we'd have missed.
What we learned
Ranking is harder than scraping: the value of an event isn't just its prize.
What's next
More sources, and starting a project in our team workspace straight from an event.
