Inspiration
Our inspiration: Recently there has been a higher occurrence of assault and shady behavior being reported in the vicinity of CMU's campus. These incidents combined with the Tree of Life shooting that occurred in October of 2019, led us to become deeply concerned with the safety of ourselves and our friends during our time at CMU. As we looked at the current systems CMU has in place to keep students safe, we felt that they were inadequate which led us to develop our own innovative safety system.
What it does
We designed an app that contains several features that we felt would make us safer during our time at campus:
-An alternative to CMU email alerts that notifies you via In-App Messages and Push Notifications of campus incidents
-Friend groups, where you can send your location and other information so your friends can help keep you safe.
-safe,scared, and HELP status's that will track your current situation
-Real time communication with the CMU Police Department
-Anti-harassment tools such as audio recording and emergency whistle.
How we built it
Cordova, Node JS, RESTful API's, Google Maps API, Firebase, Android Studio, XCode
Challenges we ran into
Designing WebUI, dealing with API calls,
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
How to design a cross platform app, that provides location tracking services, and real time communication across different devices.
What's next for ScottySecurity
We hope to add several more features to the app, including CMU specific features. We plan to implement single-sign on using CMU's shibboleth security APIs, as well as ID tracking for when students check into buildings.
