Inspiration

We were inspired by the main problem in the case: Scotiabank already has strong investment products like Scotia iTRADE and Smart Investor, but many young Canadians still do not feel ready to start investing.

The case showed that many young people lack confidence, do not know where to start, and often learn about money from social media. We wanted to build a safer first step before real investing.

That is why we created ScotiaStart.

What it does

ScotiaStart helps young Canadians learn, practice, and start investing for real through Scotiabank.

The user journey has three main parts:

  1. Learn with a free Scotia Money Passport certificate
  2. Practice with a virtual campus investment league
  3. Start real investing through Scotia iTRADE, Smart Investor, and AutoStart

Users can create a profile, join a virtual investment league, receive virtual money, build a portfolio, check the leaderboard, complete learning modules, view compound growth, and then move to a Scotia Starter Path.

The goal is not to push risky trading. The goal is to help students build confidence, understand risk, and take a small first step.

How we built it

We built a front end MVP website to show the full user flow.

The prototype includes:

  1. Login page
  2. Profile setup
  3. League home
  4. Virtual money page
  5. Portfolio builder
  6. Leaderboard
  7. Certificate hub
  8. Compound growth page
  9. Scotia Starter Path page

We focused on the product story, user experience, and business logic. The site uses mock data and local front end logic to make the journey feel real.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was deciding how to make investing feel exciting without making it feel like gambling.

At first, the virtual league could look like a simple trading game. We fixed this by making the score based on return, risk control, diversification, and learning progress.

Another challenge was the presentation work. We needed to build the prototype, write the business story, create the slide deck, and prepare the demo in a short time.

A lot of the work was done by one person, so the contribution load was heavy. We had to move fast and focus on the most important parts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that ScotiaStart is not just a random app idea.

It connects to real Scotiabank products like Scotia iTRADE, Smart Investor, TFSA, FHSA, RRSP, GICs, and AutoStart investing.

We are also proud of the full user journey. The prototype shows how a student can go from learning, to practicing, to building confidence, to starting real investing inside the Scotia ecosystem.

The Scotia Starter Path page is one of the strongest parts because it connects the virtual experience to real business value.

What we learned

We learned that the real problem is not only access to investment products.

The deeper problem is confidence.

Young Canadians may have money, but they often do not know what the first step should be. A good product needs to lower fear, teach simple concepts, and create a safe path before asking users to invest real money.

We also learned that a strong hackathon project needs both product experience and business impact. A good prototype is not enough by itself. The story, data, and conversion path also need to be clear.

What's next for ScotiaStart

The next step would be to pilot ScotiaStart on Canadian campuses.

Scotiabank could start with a small student challenge, free certificates, and a limited Scotia iTRADE starter credit campaign.

After the pilot, ScotiaStart could expand to more campuses, finance clubs, business programs, and co op students.

In the future, Scotiabank could also partner with or acquire small financial education communities to bring more young users into the Scotia ecosystem.

The long term goal is simple:

Build the first investing habit inside Scotiabank before fintechs own the relationship.
