Inspiration

Scotiabank already has the customer. It just doesn't have their investment account yet.

18-34 year-old Scotiabank depositors aren't becoming investors, not because they lack money or access, but because every Scotia investment flow starts with a decision they don't feel ready to make. 45% aren't confident in their investment knowledge. 43% don't know where to begin. The real competitor isn't Wealthsimple. It's inertia.

Wealthsimple wins because they made the bridge from banking to investing effortless. We don't beat them by being a better Wealthsimple; we win by becoming the bridge. Scotia has every piece of a customer's financial life in one platform. The bridge isn't long. It's just unbuilt.

What It Does

We built two features that live inside the Scotiabank mobile app.

Idle Money Nudges surface personalized prompts powered by data only Scotia has: idle cash, spending patterns, and paycheque timing. "You have $6,400 sitting idle. Here's what that becomes invested." One tap opens a transfer into a pre-built TFSA with no account-opening flow and no forms.

A first-timer iTRADE experience drops the user into a polished investment interface once funds land. It includes a trade hub to browse and act on stocks, contextual education that defines terms at the moment they appear, and a daily explainer that tells them why their holdings moved. The moment of investing is the moment of learning.

How We Built It

A fully interactive React and Vite prototype styled to match Scotiabank's design language. Two live modes, banking shell and iTRADE, are switchable during a demo. Custom SVG charts throughout, and fund transfers update balances across both views in real time.

Challenges We Ran Into

Designing for someone who has never invested without being condescending. The answer was contextual education: define things at the moment they appear, not before. We also had to resist the urge to build features and stay focused on the one thing that actually matters, which is getting someone to make their first investment.

Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of

A complete end-to-end flow from a personalized nudge on the banking dashboard to a confirmed stock order in under three minutes, without leaving Scotia. The contextual Explain layer makes financial terms approachable without a tutorial. And the core insight: the problem isn't product, it's activation energy.

What I Learned

The moment of investing is the moment of learning. Duolingo doesn't teach Spanish before you open the app. The best financial education is transactional; you learn what a TFSA is by opening one. Scotia's data advantage is real because Wealthsimple has to ask while Scotia already knows. The product challenge is surfacing that knowledge at the right moment, and that's solvable.
