Scotia Scout: Turning Deposits Into Investments

What Inspired Us One of our team members lived this problem firsthand. At 18, they opened a TFSA with their bank, got shown a 2% managed return, and left. They went to YouTube and TikTok, taught themselves how to invest, and now sit at a 30% return in their self-directed portfolio. That story is happening to millions of young Canadians. Scotiabank already has their accounts, their trust, and their data, but they're losing them to Wealthsimple and Questrade at the moment that matters most. We asked: what if Scotiabank could intercept that moment first? What We Built

Scotia Scout, an AI-powered feature inside the Scotiabank banking app that detects idle money in your chequing account, nudges you with a personalized notification, and converts you into an investor in one tap. It analyzes your spending patterns, identifies surplus cash, and automatically creates an investment account for you. No branch. No paperwork. No barriers. What We Learned The biggest barrier to investing is not money, it is the moment of action. Building Scout taught us that the best financial education happens inside the action, not before it.

Challenges We Faced Designing something simple enough for a first-time investor while making it powerful enough to be taken seriously by Scotiabank judges, that balance was the hardest thing to get right.
