Inspiration

Freelancers often receive vague client requests, then spend time turning them into estimates, clarifying expectations, and arranging payment. I built ScopePay to connect those steps in one simple workflow: from a client brief to a reviewed quote and a confirmed payment.

What it does

ScopePay turns a client’s brief into an editable proposal using AI powered by Groq. The proposal includes suggested deliverables, estimated hours, pricing, assumptions, and questions to resolve.

The freelancer reviews the draft and can adjust the scope before approving the quote. ScopePay then opens PayPal sandbox checkout. After a successful payment capture, it displays a receipt confirmation with the amount, project, client, transaction identifiers, and payment time.

Quotes can be saved in the browser, and proposals and receipts can be printed or saved as PDFs.

How I built it

I built ScopePay with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and Node.js, and deployed it on Vercel. Groq handles AI generation, while PayPal’s Orders API handles sandbox order creation and payment capture.

API credentials stay on the server. The server calculates quote totals and validates the payment amount before confirming completion. The source code is available publicly on GitHub under the MIT license.

Challenges I faced

The main challenges were AI API quota restrictions, configuring separate PayPal sandbox buyer and merchant accounts, and keeping the checkout flow reliable on mobile.

I switched the active AI integration to Groq, corrected the sandbox account setup, and added a clear receipt modal so users can see when payment has completed.

Accomplishments

I completed the full workflow from entering a brief to generating a proposal, reviewing it, completing PayPal sandbox checkout, and displaying a receipt. The demonstration video shows a successful $100 test transaction.

All demonstrated payments use PayPal’s sandbox. No real money is charged.

What I learned

I learned how to combine AI-generated suggestions with human review and server-side payment validation. I also learned the importance of clear error messages and visible payment confirmation.

What’s next

I plan to add account-based quote storage, shareable client approval pages, and milestone payments. Live payments would follow further testing and production account setup.
