Inspiration
Scope creep is a common challenge in freelance software development. A client agrees to a set of deliverables, but as the project progresses, new requests emerge. Without a clear way to compare those requests against the original agreement, developers risk taking on extra work, facing misunderstandings, or damaging client relationships.
I built ScopeLock to help developers manage that problem before it becomes a dispute.
How I built it
ScopeLock lets developers turn a client brief into a defined baseline of deliverables. Once the baseline is approved, new client requests can be evaluated against it.
The comparison engine classifies requests as in scope, possible changes, or items that need further review. Developers can then accept, reject, or clarify requests, record decisions in an audit history, and draft client responses. When the project requirements change, developers can prepare and lock a new version of the baseline without losing the history of previous decisions.
I focused on making the core workflow practical and easy to demonstrate, rather than building a large project management platform.
Challenges
One of the main challenges was making request comparisons useful without relying on an AI model to make every decision. ScopeLock uses deterministic comparison logic to provide consistent results and supporting evidence. This also means ambiguous requests still require human judgment; the tool is designed to support developers, not make final decisions for them.
Another important consideration was preserving accountability. Recording decisions and maintaining a history helps developers understand what was requested, how it was evaluated, and what was agreed.
What I learned
Building ScopeLock reinforced the importance of solving a specific problem with a focused workflow. A useful developer tool doesn't always need more automation or more features. Sometimes, the biggest value comes from making an existing process clearer, more consistent, and easier to track.
ScopeLock is built around that idea: help developers protect agreed scope, handle changes professionally, and maintain a clear record while keeping people in control.
