Coming in to the GlassHacks Hackathon, all of us had minimal experience in coding and programming. This did not discourage us, however. We were inspired by a famous YouTube rapper, 3PAC. 3PAC was tragically killed a little over a year ago, and we decided to dedicate our game to him. 3PAC had a passion for McChickens, as well as being notorious for "giving zero hoots" and strongly disliked owls. We took these aspects of 3PAC's lifestyle and applied them to our game, Scoot The Hoot.
Scoot The Hoot is an interactive computer game, where the player is a floating McChicken in front of a background picture of 3PAC. By clicking the "ACCELERATION" button, the player can control the flight of the McChicken and avoid the evil owls. Overtime, the more owls that get surpassed, the less hoots that you receive. If the player is skilled enough, they even have the opportunity to reach negative HOOTS, which is measured in the top right corner. Our tribute to 3PAC is a highly addictive and challenging game. He would be proud.
First, we examined a game template and learned about each coding lines and what they meant. We worked together in altering the code, including pictures of owls, a floating McChicken, and a background picture of 3PAC. We also coded the countdown of HOOTS in the top right corner, changed the speed of the game, and brought the owls in closer together. All of this required lots of time and research with HTML and JavaScript.
This was not smooth sailing for the entire project, however. We ran into a series of challenges which set us back. For example, we struggled in setting the HOOT indicated to count down instead of counting up. Also, we ran into difficulties with the border of the playing screen. For example, we discovered a glitch where the McChicken could be accelerated above the owls out of screen, and easily fly past them. With help from several mentors, we were able to resolve the issues and create a great game overall.
Throughout the entire 24 hour period, we learned more than we could have ever imagined. As I mentioned earlier, we entered this event with minimal knowledge in coding and programming. As a group, we are proud of the way we remained focused and determined on the end result. Above all, we are most proud of the fact that we were able to dedicate our project to 3PAC while having a great time and producing a nice end project.
In the future, we would like to make our game compatible with IOS and Android in order to reach out to more 3PAC enthusiasts like ourselves.
