Problem

When opening the news app, users are flooded with information from every category. Not only are they overwhelmed but they can also feel lost, as they may not know where to begin or what to look for. Additionally, the lack of personalization in traditional news apps can deter many people (especially younger audiences), as they have to sift and search through many articles. This can be time-consuming and frustrating, preventing users from educating themselves with the content they deserve to read. Furthermore, as social media is rising amongst all ages, the lack of a social component in news apps limits the opportunity for users to engage in meaningful conversations with their friends or broader community. It’s important to stay educated not only with your interests, but with your friend’s interests, and current events.

Solution

How might we design a news app that not only curates content based on individual interests to reduce feeling overwhelmed with information but also incorporates a social component to foster discussion and education amongst users, creating a more personalized and interactive experience with current events?

Scoop directly addresses the core issues of traditional news apps such as an overload of information and lack of personalization and social interaction. By curating a feed of current news articles based on individual interests that are inputted when signing up and also through the use of the app, we aim to reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed. In addition to having a curated feed of relevant news articles, we also want users to stay educated on current events that might not align with their initial interests, which can be seen through our “Current” page. Furthermore, by enabling users to share “scoops” with their friends and have conversations about articles they’ve read, they are educating themselves and their community about a wide range of events. Overall, Scoop combines curation with social interaction, creating a digital platform that encourages its users to share their knowledge with others.
