Ridesharing for a Greener Tomorrow 🌍

Inspiration

Students face the daily challenges of rising transportation costs, limited parking, and the environmental impact of solo commuting. Scoop is inspired by the opportunity to help students save money, time, and contribute to a more sustainable future by sharing rides with others commuting to campus.

What It Does

Scoop provides a user-friendly platform where students seeking a ride can easily connect with those driving to campus. With simple request and offer options, students can find ride matches based on compatible routes and schedules, helping to reduce individual car usage and foster a greener environment.

How We Built It

We developed Scoop using a combination of React/TypeScript for the frontend and Python’s Flask for the backend. Firebase was integrated for secure authentication and real-time data handling, ensuring a smooth and interactive user experience.

Challenges We Ran Into

The frontend development posed some challenges, especially in creating a seamless user interface that would make the matching process intuitive for both drivers and riders.

Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of

We’re particularly proud of the backend algorithm we designed, which matches riders with drivers based on route and schedule compatibility. This algorithm forms the core of Scoop’s functionality, making it easy for students to find efficient ride-sharing options.

What We Learned

The process taught us a great deal—from improving frontend skills to understanding the intricacies of secure authentication and user data handling. There’s almost too much to list, but each challenge offered valuable insights!

What’s Next for Scoop

Our next goal is to develop Scoop into a fully functional product that students can rely on for campus commutes. We plan to expand its features, integrate more sustainability tracking, and explore additional campuses to increase its impact.
