Inspiration

Embracing the curious questions children pose, and providing a unique easy way for them to learn fun science concepts without the jargon that can make science daunting is the key inspiration behind creating SciFun.

What it does

Two inputs are required:

  • A curious science question eg: Why do clothes get dried when kept outside? The earth looks flat to me, how can we be sure it is actually round?
  • User's 2 favorite Marvel characters: eg: Spiderman and Antman

SciFun then generates a comic book, with conversation between the above Marvel characters explaining the reason behind the asked question It also delivers an easy to perform at-home experiment enhancing understanding of the relevant concepts further. Lastly, the ChatBot feature enables further details to be clarified, any additional help needed etc.

This gives an interactive learning platform and helps children grasp concepts in science in a practical way.

How we built it

AWS PartyRock powered by Amazon Bedrock is used to create SciFun.

  • Claude is used for generating the comic book, lab experiment content and the ChatBot
  • Stable Diffusion XL is used for image building

Challenges we ran into

The idea was to create a comic book with speech bubbles filled with the custom created dialogues that Claude provides; similarly create a block of images to showcase the materials required and each step in the lab experiment.

While experimenting I discovered that a comic book pattern does get created with speech bubbles but it does not comprehend and fill them with the comic book dialogues generated by Claude.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Being able to build out the idea in a comprehensive and easy way
  • Provided SciFi to a few family members (ages: 12-15) and they enjoyed the functionality and had some interesting questions.
  • Being able to implement practical learning to explain science concepts, makes learning more fun and long lasting

What we learned

  • Conceptualizing before creating is important

What's next for SciFun

  • While experimenting I discovered that a comic book pattern does get created with speech bubbles but it does not comprehend and fill them with the comic book dialogues generated by Claude. Perhaps, with image builder capabilities enhancing further, we can generate more comprehensive comics, diagrams and images.
  • Iteratively test out with more of the targeted audience and integrate more features like: a suggestion box with interesting science questions, areas of interest, science fact of the day etc.
