Inspiration
As a long-time Bitcoin investor frustrated by guesswork in DCA strategies, I wanted a tool that cuts through hype with hard historical data. Watching peers choose random buy frequencies or miss tax-saving opportunities sparked the idea to build a planner rooted in real market performance, not intuition.
What it does
BitcoinDCA Planner empowers investors to simulate historical DCA performance, compare weekly/monthly/biweekly buy schedules, contrast DCA vs lump-sum approaches, test custom conditional buy rules, and access region-specific tax guidance for crypto gains. Every metric is calculated using real Bitcoin price history to drive confident decisions.
How we built it
We started by curating Bitcoin price data from 2015 onward, then built a React frontend for intuitive user inputs (date ranges, investment amounts) and a Python backend to compute core metrics (ROI = (Net Return / Total Invested) × 100). Chart.js powered visualizations, and PostgreSQL stored historical price data. We iterated on UI/UX to prioritize clarity for non-technical investors.
Challenges we ran into
Aligning frequency comparison logic (ensuring equal total investment across weekly/biweekly/monthly schedules) required precise formula adjustments. Balancing tax guidance accuracy (region-specific rules for EU/US) with legal disclaimers was also tricky—we had to validate guidance against official tax resources without overstepping into legal advice.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a tool that turns complex financial calculations into actionable insights: users can instantly see how a dip-based buy strategy outperforms standard DCA, or why monthly buys might suit their risk profile better. The clean, data-focused visualizations make even long-term portfolio trends easy to interpret.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of crypto tax frameworks across Western markets and how behavioral finance impacts investment strategy adoption. Technically, we mastered balancing frontend usability with backend data accuracy—critical for financial tools where precision matters above all.
What's next for this project
We plan to add support for long-term projection modeling (5/10-year forecasts), integrate real-time price feeds, and expand tax guidance to cover more European jurisdictions. We also aim to build a session-based save feature for users to revisit custom strategy simulations.
