School Pickup Tracker

Inspiration

The problem that I wanted to solve was parents being able to keep track of their kids daily school schedule. Schedule's can change on a day to day basis, and they also change due to special events at schools, so to help parents keep track of this I created this app. For special days the app sends out an SMS reminder that puts emphasis on the change in pickup time so parents don't forget.

What it does

It sends parents daily text messages and gives them a reminder for any school they "subscribe" to within the app. They SMS contains the school schedule for the day as well as the pickup time.

How we built it

We used proto.io to create a prototype for the app

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we ran into was finding out how do get this information form school. There are millions of school around the country and it would be impossible to get each school's information by hand. Schools also always update their schedule so that was also something we had to take into account.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Figuring out that we can parse through the pdf of school schedule's which are located on school website's was my biggest accomplishment

What we learned

I learned about parsing data from websites and how to prototype an app

What's next for SchoolTracker

Add more features such as calendar integration and making it into a fully functional app. I also want to add a feature that can help make carpooling seamless and easy, so that parents can set schedule's with each other so they know who is picking up and dropping off on what days. Also we can enhance this app so that it can also include dropping.
