Inspiration

Unfortunately, our idea was brought to life after the recent school shooting in Texas. This crucial event brought up the issue of school safety in America once again. This time, we were not going to simply listen to the news of another school shooting. Instead, we wanted to make meaningful change to help protect our school systems.

What it does

Our product will allow administrators to set up schools, and then allow students to join schools. Administrators can use google maps to search for their school and place exits on the map. Further, when students open the app, they can report an active school shooter. Students may also differentiate whether they see or hear a school shooter. Finally, students can also use single-click technology to automatically call authorities with a message indicating that there is an active school shooter at their location, allowing students to remain quiet while still communicating all necessary details.

How we built it

We built it the frontend in React Native, Expo, multiple Google APIs, as well as Firebase. We built the backend using NodeJS, ExpressJS, and the Twilio API.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many challenges through this process. Besides the time zone differences, not all of us knew how to use React Native, which meant it was also a learning process for us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of the entire product. We are especially happy with our path-finding software, and the UI which we spend lots of time polishing to be as intuitive and easy to use as possible as to prevent confusion in some high-stress situations.

What we learned

We learned how to interact with many of Google's APIs including the Google maps API to track location in real-time. We are also very proud of the one-click call which uses text to speech to call authorities and relay the callers location and that there is an active school shooter all while being silent on the callers side.

What's next for SchoolSafe

We imagine a future where school safe is used all over America, as we utilize software to get done what politics cant.
