Inspiration 🌱
Not a lot of school curricula extends its scope to teaching students about sustainability or being environmentally aware. A lot of the times it doesn't exist or only exists in a theoretical sense for namesake. We wanted to bring light to this, enable schools to include such activities and practices, all the while making it more fun and practical for kids to enjoy. Interactive project/activity based learning along with incentivizing tasks not only promotes sustainability in the present practical sense, but also instills emotional empathy for the environment in the kids too!
Our aim is to ensure that kids utilize our software to not only become aware about the best practices for the environment but also get rewarded incrementally for their actions, get to help their classmates and develop a deeper and broader understanding that helps them visualize the bigger picture.
Hence, we introduce to you Leafore, a platform to revolutionize inculcation of environmental studies with practical implementations to sustain, educate and enable eco-friendly best practices.
What it does 🍃
Our project is a doorway to revolutionize the academic curriculum for kids to ensure they get all-in-one interaction to get themselves educated right about sustanability best practices.
Leafore houses an array of features that are extremely interactive and would keep the kids engaged while learning the best things they could do for our planet 🌍
1. Deeds
- A bunch of deeds are listed out to choose from
- Each deed has a certain weightage of points that can be earned by the student
- When doing the deed, the points automatically get redeemed when claimed
- The deed claiming is only done on a weekly basis on a friday
- This ensures that our claiming databases are run only for about an hour instead of 24/7 - which makes sure that we don't have a lot of carbon emissions
- Another plus point being it ensures there is development of healthy competition among the kids
2. Rewards
- Remember the points? These points can be used to redeem gifts that are just as equally rewarding as doing the deed
- There is an array of prizes/rewards to claim, each of which usually has point allocation worth at least 3 deeds
- Every time a deed is posted, it is optionally (but recommended) to post a deed too
- This ensures there are enough deeds and also more rewards to claim!
3. Dashboard
- View all the points you have earned so far here
- A daily quote that keeps the kids motivated
- Daily prompt to act as a reminder to keep doing something every day
- Direct link to forum and quizzes
- A tiny tab displaying all important days wherein one can take some bigger steps and measures compared to the daily~
4. Quizzes
- Fun quizzes to keep students engaged
- Doing the quizzes also has its own incentive
- A leaderboard is maintained to ensure the students can compete with each other while also having fun since the scores aren't directly visible
- Every time a student hits the top of the leaderboard, they get to plant a tree on their name!
5. Plant a tree
- Top the leaderboard, you get to plant a plant
- All plants are planted within the school premises
- There are a variety of plants to choose from
- Each plant chosen is planted with the name tag of the student
- Again this ensures the students are able to actively participate with practical incentivization
6. Forum
- Got doubts? Head here
- Post questions in the forums, no matter how silly, get them answered by other students
- Acts as a peer to peer indirect communication
- Anonymously doubts can be asked without hesitation
- Even ideas, discussion threads can be made among the kids
7. Chatbot
- At times there are doubts so unique, only AI can solve
- Every student/teacher would be required to put their OpenAI token in
- We'd be giving prompts sustainability related, get them asked and solved immediately
- However, as a precaution, it is important to fact-check the information in terms of ethical practices too
8. Recreational Activities
- Have weekly recreational, team building, sustainable activities around the corner
- Fun ideas and projects deserve a space, hence we also added this!
- Any eco-friendly activity that can be performed in groups can be added here
- A lot of the times, we forget how fulfilling it can be to do good for the planet collectively, so why not do it through us!
9. NGO Resources
- Donate clothes, give out old textbooks and much more via NGOs
- Waste isn't a waste if it can be used by someone else, donation and being able to recycle old items should be done on a regular
- Kids can choose to donate their old stuffs here whenever they want to, direct contacts to good and helpful NGOs are linked as an additional resource so that kids don't get lost!
10. News
- Staying up to date with what's happening is just as important!
- On the news tab, you can browse through the news and get latest updates
How we built it 🦾
We have used Nuxt for building the sustainable application, Nuxt runs on Cloudflare's Green Compute data centers, which aligns with our original goal of having a sustainable ecosystem. We run the leaderboard aggregation every weekend on Sunday, because calculating it every day would mean a lot of energy utilization, which isn't really needed~
Challenges we ran into 🏁
- We ran through a lot of technical difficulties while developing the platform, especially the database of our choice was giving quite a lot of problems which we resolved later after switching it completely
- Designing a simple yet beautiful UI pertaining towards the younger audience was pretty hard
- Finding the best alternatives for rewarding the kids was a bit challenging, a lot of the claimed to be eco-friendly products weren't of much value
- Lack of updated resources that are actually digestible for younger brains
- Diversified curriculum for schools, a lot of the resources we were able to find didn't actually integrate technological solutions
Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆
- Building an actual fully functional project in such less time, considering how much of a struggle it was setting up and getting the database to work
- Coming up with an idea that is actually pretty functional and has the potential to scale and make an impact
- Considering how much research was required to build up this project, we are honestly proud to be able to successfully design something useable and something that solves a lot of the problems we personally experienced when trying to get ourselves educated about eco-friendliness and sustainability
What we learned 🧠
- Sustainability is taken much more lightly than we anticipated, through our own experiences we realized how much of a problem it was posing to be.
- It's much easier to talk the talk! A lot of people tend not to actively take action towards building a sustainable environment
- A different UI building approach - we really never thought of building a platform where our target audience would be much younger than us
- Through building our platform, we ourselves got educated on various eco-friendly methods and best practices
What's next for school 🚀
- A more peer to peer interaction feature
- Community building based vision (interschool participation and much more)
- Arrangements of funds, campaigns through our platform
- Involvement of parents of wards, a separate family-school mixture platform
- Goal based accomplishments for individual, school and district level missions
