Inspiration
In the ever-evolving landscape of global safety concerns, the need for streamlined communication in emergency situations, particularly in educational settings, has become paramount. Inspired by the countless news stories about emergencies in schools and our personal experiences with lockdown drills, we felt a strong pull to leverage technology as a solution. We envisioned an application that could serve as a conduit for precise, timely, and effective communication during crises, ensuring the utmost safety for all involved.
What it does
Our "School Safety App" serves multiple stakeholders within the educational ecosystem, from parents and students to staff and emergency response personnel. It equips them with real-time emergency alerts, facilitates quick check-ins during crises, offers a platform for broadcast communications, and provides incident tracking. For staff, there's an in-built communication interface, incident reporting capabilities, and access to emergency response plans. The app also integrates AI-driven chatbots and sentiment analysis, ensuring quick responses and monitoring social media platforms for potential threats, respectively.
How we built it
To transform our vision into reality, we utilized the versatility of Expo and React JS, ensuring a robust backend for our app. For a seamless user experience, we prototyped our designs using Figma, which helped in visualizing the user journey. All the data, given its sensitive nature, is securely stored and managed using Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
The journey wasn't without its challenges. Designing a one-size-fits-all app structure, catering to diverse user groups, proved complex. We grappled with creating flows that would intuitively address the unique needs of each user group. Moreover, determining the potential user groups and comprehensively capturing their requirements demanded rigorous brainstorming.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team's ability to rise to the occasion and teach ourselves both UI/UX design principles and coding in React Native stands out as a major accomplishment. This proactive approach not only expanded our skill set but also enriched the app's usability and functionality.
What we learned
The project was a steep learning curve. We undertook extensive research to grasp what schools and students genuinely require during emergencies. Through this, we gained deep insights into the practical nuances of school safety and understood the importance of integrating personal experiences, like lockdown drills, into solution-building.
What's next for School Safety App
Our mission doesn't stop here. We're reaching out to local nonprofits to forge meaningful partnerships and expand our app's outreach. We also have our sights set on infusing more AI-driven features, specifically, an innovative system that would guide users on the safest way to exit a room during emergencies.
