Inspiration
The recent Uvalde school shooting, one of the biggest tragedies we experienced this year, got us thinking. It's unlikely for the 4th admendment of the US constitution to be rewritten, so what if we could design a security system that could help reduce the amount of causalties that occured each year due to school shootings? We researched a bit and found that there is a current lack of helpful school security systems, and our goal was to change this.
What it does
We designed a system that allows schools to be safer when it comes to security. The security cameras that are installed in our plan track if there are people waiting outside for an extended period of time without any motive, in which it alerts the office, and checks if anyone is trying to get in the school through entrances that are not the front door, in which it puts all doors in the school on auto lock and notifies the front desk so they can notify the school via announcements. At the front desk, there is a camera/microphone setting that detects movement- the camera can record everything and the microphone allows the front desk admins to talk to the vistor without them coming in. The vistor can then express their reason for trying to go in the school, and the front desk can choose to let them in or not.
How we built it
We designed the plan simply on a Google Docs as we discussed it with our team. We had two people work on the presentation and the two others making the CAD model and the repl.it model. We also had frequent Zoom and Google Meet meetings in order to communicate with our team quickly and discuss things, as well as work sessions in which we spent time creating our product.
Challenges we ran into
Definitely the lack of coding experience we had. 3 out of the 4 members in our group had some sort of coding experience- 2 taking classes and 1 self-learning via the internet. However, both the members who took classes previously were still extremely beginner to coding, as they hadn't coded for years and completely forgot everything. We relied on the member that had self-learned, which was a challenge because she never recieved proper training, but we got it done in the end. Our project that was created via coding was fairly simple, but we're proud.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I think just getting it done early and quickly. We had a variety of talents (and personalities!) in our group, so it was a bit hard to communicate with everyone and decide on a topic. That was definitely one of our biggest challenges, but we ended up coming to a desicion, thought of a solution, designed everything, and split up the work effectively and efficently.
What we learned
We defintely grew a lot in these two days, whether in teamwork aspects or just managing a task together. Specifically, we all learned something new in our portion of work, whether how to code better, design aspects, writing, expressing ideas, and presentation skills, as well as communications.
What's next for School Safety
We believe that school safety is a huge part of students and the country's lives. The fact that many schools still even lack the basics of a security system is just baffling, and we know we need to change this. School security systems will continue to grow throughout the course of society, especially now. We believe that by introducing this security plan, other ideas can grow with it, and it would be amazing to see our plan being carried out one day and seeing our work actively function in people's daily lives. We want to see a change- that's why we chose this project.
