Alexa helps your kids get ready for school
You know what it's like in the morning. Your kids have a million things to do - get up, have breakfast, get dressed, remember the guitar on Wednesdays, the gym kit on Fridays. It's hard to keep track of all this and keep your kids moving, so imagine if you had a little extra helping hand, er, voice! That's where the School Run skill comes in.
What it does
You tell the School Run skill the names of your kids, and the activities they each have to complete in order to be ready for school. In the morning, your kids awaken the skill and get cracking. Alexa will listen for what they've completed and let them know what's left to do, while you spend a bit more time in bed, in the shower, or trying on those new outfits for work!
How I built it
I used Ruby on Rails and MySQL, because these are my preferred languages.
Challenges I ran into
Making the skill flexible was the biggest challenge. The skills needs to work for any number of kids, each with different things to complete on any given morning.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It works and it's easy to use!
What I learned
I learned how voice user interfaces work, and how they differ from visual interfaces. It's really fun to understand this new construct.
What's next for School Run
I think I'll wait for feedback and suggestions. Maybe it could be extended to other activities, i.e. not just for kids and not just for school!
