Inspiration

Our biggest inspiration for the project was the Big Mouth Billy Bass, a singing fish trophy that gets hung on the wall. We were also inspired to make a free study tool that had character like Lofi Girl. However, we wanted an app that encouraged us to study longer and more frequently with a built in reward system.

What it does

The app helps you keep track of studying goals and long-term studying habits with a singing fish that plays in the background and times your studying with a timer. After completing 3 hours of studying, the user gains a new fish - with a new song - which is added to their gallery. They also gain new honor titles like 'Super Fish' with each fish gained and learn a cool new fun fact about them. The app also records the longest time studied by user and lets them know the number of hours till the next fish. The user can also display their three favorite fish in their living room.

How we built it

Once we came up with the idea, we fleshed it out and designed the initial prototype with Figma. We then used all of the images and assets from Figma into VS Code to code the music playback, timer, and additional features with python. To manage all the media and visuals, we used the pygame library. We prompted Claude to help generate the code for the animated visuals such as the singing fish and the fire in the living room fireplace.

Challenges we ran into

We had to create different frames to animate the singing fish which was initially difficult. Matching the Figma design with the pygame visuals was also challenging as we had to figure out how to convert it. To troubleshoot it, we also had to figure out how to add developer keys to ensure it was functioning as intended. We also had to remember to stay within our plan for the app, and not add to many features in the beginning.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Finding a way to animate the fish and help the user effectively track their studying in a simple manner are some things we really proud of. Our interactive and easy-to-navigate UI lets the user understand how they have studied so far and what fish they are gaining next. We are also happy that they are learning cool facts about different fish. Finding a way to help the user to incentivize their studying sessions with different honors received is also something we are proud of.

What we learned

We learned how to work and communicate better as a team using Github, as we had to keep track of what we pushing to the repository and pulling from it. Making sure we did not override any changes and divided our tasks separately was key for this. We also learned the importance of design n creating an enjoyable user experience, by working out how to display user statistics and provide the user a way of displaying their fish. Prompting AI intelligently was also something we learned as we had to be specific about what we wanted and how we wanted a particular feature to be executed.

What's next for School of Bass

As we scale up the app, we would like to have a customer feedback button to see what the users like, what they do not and what additional features they would like to see. In addition to our playlist, we could also give the user an option to upload their own playlist and possibly set their own timer. They could also be incentivized to earn more honors and fish by giving them an option to decorate their living room with furniture as they level up. We plan on improving the quality of the animated fish, adding more fish for higher levels and adding more fish fun facts so that users enjoy a fun educational experience. We plan on letting users share their achievements with friends and visit other people's living rooms to create fun shared experiences. To make sure they do not have to pause their timer to ask for assistance during their homework, we plan on adding a built-in AI homework assistant.
