Overview

@school is a Learning Management System with a plethora of features making the pre-existing software obsolete. The first core feature is MarkMe, a two-step authentication system designed to mark the role. MarkMe uses machine learning for facial recognition as well as an NFC to read student cards or phones. The second major part is a single page web application that incorporates many core features that Google Classrooms and other systems lack. It uses contemporary UX for seamless use, as well as direct messaging and integrated email APIs to make communication between teachers and student a problem of the past. Furthermore, it automates the ranking system converting all statistics into a printable PDF so that teachers no longer have to worry about calculating scores or communicating them to students. @school is designed to meet the needs of both students and teachers alike.

The problem

Despite rapid development in technology, schools still use outdated technology. Sites such as Coursera and EDX have successfully taken these technologies and applied them to education, allowing students to learn anything, at their own pace. Inspired by this, we also aimed to use technology to improve education for future generations. Problems

  1. Students and teachers alike find it difficult to communicate effectively outside the classroom.

  2. Teachers also constantly have to familiarise themselves with many different systems and often end up posting the same information to multiple locations.

  3. Furthermore, teachers are prone to incorrectly marking students present to class, resulting in parental anxiety.

Design Features

Our system is designed to integrate attendance systems, school databases, and Learning Management systems (LMS) into one. The attendance system, our initial idea for the project, automatically marks the role through computer vision. The school database will work in conjunction with the LMS so that all the information of teachers and students, for instance, grades, can be accessed in one single page application.

Challenges

Our struggles reside primarily in machine learning, and UX design. The Machine Learning for MarkMe - our Attendance Marking System use mathematics not taught in our school courses, therefore we have had to take courses on Coursera and EDx to effectively understand it. Furthermore, designing an intuitive, simplistic UX design proved quite difficult. We have had to redesign the system multiple times so as to create an application with a shallow learning curve.

The future

The project was designed in order to revolutionize education through ease of communication, the merging of systems and automation of menial, error-prone tasks. In order to achieve our desired goals, we need sufficient funds for deploying the server to a fast, secure host.
