Inspiration
Was a game inspired by the school life experience in a sims style.
What it does
It is a simulator creating experiences and paths for the player to experience the life of a student. It has many options that can be selected that allows the player to virtually progress through their character's life similar to a real life student.
How we built it
We built our game application using different layers. We coded the functionality in C# and used photoshop and pixel art to create our frames and backdrops. Finally the game logic and graphics were tied together using Unity game engine.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, our Unity game engine was giving us problems due to the amount of update installs and also multiple crashes during the development process. Furthermore, certain images in photoshop were not scaling correctly which forced us to manipulate our graphics a little more.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud of the final product we were able to produce within 24 hours. As well as the extremely consistent work ethic of all our team members. In terms of our software, we are particularly happy with our unique pixel art and overall aesthetic of our game as it has quite unique vibe.
What we learned
Our team has learned alot about the Unity game engine and game development in general. This was our second time developing with Unity and we were able to take our skills further than before as we learned about things such, prefabs, singletons, game objects, etc. In addition, we were able to generate alot of the game art ourselves through photoshop and pixel art which allowed us to learn more about image editing and frame animation as we got familiar with these tools.
What's next for School Life Sims
In the future we are planning to expand this software to make it even more immersive by adding a character that the player can control in a 3d space. This will allow us to increase functionality by giving the game more of a free-roam functionality and possibly allowing online play down the line for characters of different players to interact with each other.
