Inspiration

As the human race struggles with global warming we are becoming more aware of our carbon footprint concerning our lifestyle, buildings, transportation, etc. The choices we make have an impact on climate change. I am inspired to do my bit and play a part in reducing our carbon footprint, however small it may be. I wanted to start with something close to home and decided to look at our schools' impact on carbon emissions and their energy consumption. I planned to check how schools are performing against a set benchmark and figure out a way to grade them regarding sustainability performance (A through D).

What it does

My program takes information about a school’s operations and calculates about how much carbon emissions it releases. It then puts it into a scale and gives it a letter grade based on that score. It recommends ways to improve that score and reduce their carbon footprint in general.

How we built it

I built the website using HTML, CSS, and JS. I saved all of the data using HTML and JS using ‘localStorage’. I was able to save all of the text input data and score data in there.

Challenges we ran into

I had to learn how to code in HTML, CSS, and JS. I struggled at first but then I eventually got the hang of it. After learning it, it took a while to get used to and I couldn’t figure out how to get the number input values into ‘localStorage’ so that took me a bit to find out. I had to add ‘.value’ at the end.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud to have learned how to make a website using HTML, CSS, and JS. I am also proud of my concept of raising awareness of school’s carbon footprint and how they can reduce it. It is very important for schools worldwide to take steps early to address climate change.

What we learned

I learned how to make a website using HTML, CSS, and JS. I also learned about carbon emissions that are being released into the Earth, and the strategies that we can employ to reduce this.

What's next for School Carbon Calculator

In the future, I plan to add more to the website by asking more questions and finding more data to make the grading system more accurate. I also plan to make the website more interesting.
