Inspiration

In an era where sustainability is not just a buzzword but a vital component of long-term growth, we were inspired by the increasing need for corporations to align their strategies with sustainable practices. Recognizing the significant role the financial sector plays in driving sustainability across industries, we aimed to equip investors with a tool that allows them to make informed decisions based on a company's commitment to sustainability.

What it does

The Schonfeld Sustainability Challenge platform visualizes stock picks from the S&P 500 through the lens of sustainability. Investors and analysts can view an aggregate sustainability score for companies, derived from various ESG metrics, Return on Investment data, and other sustainability indicators. The platform also provides a detailed breakdown, allowing users to dive deep into individual metrics and understand their implications.

How we built it

The platform was built using React for the frontend to create an interactive and responsive user interface. We incorporated various chart libraries for dynamic visualization and used the PapaParse library to process CSV data. For the backend, we utilized Node.js, ensuring seamless data flow between the frontend and our database.

Challenges we ran into

Data normalization was a significant challenge. Different companies have varied scales and ways of reporting ESG and other sustainability metrics. Ensuring that our scoring system was both comprehensive and unbiased was paramount. Additionally, designing an interface that was both informative and user-friendly posed its design and implementation challenges.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a comprehensive sustainability scoring system that considers various vital factors, ensuring a holistic view of a company's sustainability efforts. The interactive sliders and charts on our platform allow users to gain insights at a glance while also offering the capability to delve deeper into the data.

What we learned

This project taught us the importance of data in making informed investment decisions. We gained a deeper understanding of ESG metrics and their impact on overall business health and longevity. On the technical front, we honed our skills in data visualization and frontend development.

What's next for Schonfeld Sustainability Challenge

Our vision is to expand our database to include global stocks, giving investors a broader perspective. We also plan to incorporate real-time data feeds, ensuring our users always have the most up-to-date information. Furthermore, integrating AI-driven insights to predict sustainability trends and potential ROI based on various sustainability scenarios is on our roadmap.
