Applying for college and/or university can be stressful, especially when trying to get into highly competitive programs or applying from overseas. With so many deadlines to meet, test and exam scores to keep track of, fees to pay, and essays to write, it can seem impossible to accomplish everything on time. Not only is the application process itself stressful, but choosing the right school based on program reputation and requirements, among other factors, can often be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created Scholar- an app that allows users to keep track of their university applications and programs of interest, as well as compare their scores to others’ to see what their chances of getting accepted may be.

What it does

Scholar simplifies post-secondary applications by allowing you to select programs and schools of interest and showing you how you compare to other students applying to these programs. The app works by taking user input such as test scores, GPA, AP/IB classes, etc. to form your profile. Users can select schools and programs of interest, and see how their scores compare to those of others applying to the same programs. This allows them to get an idea of how likely they are to be accepted into their program of choice, as well as shows them the benchmark application standards for each program. Average application statistics are calculated using past applications as well as data from current applicants. Users are also able to chat with post-secondary admissions officers as well as fellow applicants using the messages feature. This helps to reduce stress surrounding applications and can help students get answers to any questions they may have when applying. Overall, this app helps to reduce the stressfulness and complexity of applying to universities and colleges by giving a clear reference point for where you stand in comparison to other applicants. Gone are the days of searching online forums and frantically messaging others to ask what averages universities accept or what the cutoff grades are, Scholar solves all these issues and more in one compact and user-friendly app.

How we built it

We designed this app with Figma and focused on using React native to add functionality to the program.

Challenges we ran into and what we're proud of

Some challenges we ran into included time differences between teammates, and some issues with design and the Figma files, but in the end, we produced a project that we're proud of and that we believe has many useful applications both now and moving forward.

What's next for Scholar

Due to time constraints, we were not able to fully complete this project to the extent that we would have liked, but we do have plans for what could be added in the future. Moving forward, we would like to further improve Scholar by adding additional features such as creating a chat feature, allowing the program to read and write from a database, and adding functionality to pull post-secondary application data from the internet to help ensure that statistics are accurate.
