Problem statement

Government schemes can provide vital support, but information about them is often scattered across websites and lengthy documents. People may struggle to find schemes relevant to their circumstances, understand eligibility criteria, or work out which documents and next steps are needed. These barriers can be greater for people who prefer a regional language, are less comfortable with online forms, or would rather speak than type.

What we built

SchemeSage addresses this challenge with a multilingual, voice-enabled conversational guide. It helps users share relevant details, explore potential scheme matches, and prepare a document checklist and practical next steps—while leaving scheme choices to the user and advising them to verify current details with official sources.

In one sentence: How might we make government-scheme information easier to discover and understand, so people can identify options that may fit their needs and know what to do next?

Scale & severity of the problem

The problem is national in scale, while SchemeSage currently focuses on helping people explore government schemes relevant to Andhra Pradesh. The Government of India’s National Food Security Act page says around 80 crore people are covered by the Act—roughly two-thirds of India’s population. That is not a count of people who cannot find schemes; it shows how many people rely on public support whose rules and application details matter.

The consequences can be serious. NFSA entitlements include 5 kg of foodgrains per person per month for priority households, and a maternity benefit of at least ₹6,000 for eligible pregnant and lactating women. When people have difficulty finding relevant schemes, understanding criteria, or preparing documents, they may face extra effort and delays in pursuing support that can help with food, education, farming, housing, or family needs.

The access challenge is recognized by the government’s myScheme platform, which says it helps people discover relevant schemes without having to search multiple government websites or lengthy guidelines. There is no reliable figure in these sources for how many people miss benefits specifically because scheme information is hard to navigate, so we should not present the 80-crore figure as the number affected.

Deployment & impact data

SchemeSage is deployed and publicly accessible at schemesage.tech. The live prototype is designed to help people explore government schemes through a guided conversation in 10 languages, using text or voice. It presents potential scheme matches and, for schemes users choose to explore, provides a document checklist and practical next steps.

Impact so far: We have not yet collected verified field data on unique users, completed journeys, applications submitted, benefits received, or time saved. We therefore cannot claim measured real-world outcomes or a before-and-after improvement yet. The app’s deployment demonstrates that the solution is available to try; it does not by itself prove impact.

What we will measure in a pilot: number of users who start and complete the guide, time taken to reach a shortlist and checklist, users’ understanding and confidence before and after using it, and whether they proceed to an official application or support channel. Any results should be reported only after they are collected and verified.
