Inspiration
We always have had the problem where a professor uploads a syllabus in a pdf form and you are unable to view due dates, test dates, etc without downloading the pdf and viewing it.
What it does
Schedulr takes any pdf file containing dates and uses regex and pdf parsing to extract the dates and their corresponding descriptions, due dates, etc.
How we built it
We developed the algorithm in python as a script and we then ported it over to a django webapp environment. It runs through localhost because we did not get a domain yet.
Challenges we ran into
We spent a long time jumping between ruby on rails or php or django, etc to handle the webapp because it is difficult to implement a python script directly through html.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We got the algorithm to work right, and implemented into a nice looking demo website.
What we learned
We learned vast regex, and developed our python skills as well as completely learned django from scratch.
What's next for Schedulr
We plan on implementing this with Google Calendar API to sync the dates to your calendar. We also have minor tweaking to do on the algorithm to get it to handle more than just syllabii.
