Inspiration
I joined devpost recently with Atlassian unleash being my first hackathon & I participated another 2 hackathon back to back. Hackathon deadline & schedule are mostly in USA timezone. Participant can be from any part of the world and better understand & relates local time.
What it does
Currently hackathon deadline & schudule is by default available in EST/PST timezone. Proposed to have time shown in participants local timezone. HOW? -> Basically under user's setting in Preferences & Eligibility tab , option for user to select their respective timezone from list of pre-populated time-zones & make the same as default timezone to view on hackathon page. [Note - this can be done directly by identifying from IP address but some might be on VPN- so its not desirable ] OR Have another CTA "View in Local Time" on click user taken to local time converter website with actual deadline date & time selected to view converted local time.
How we built it
Devpost to build it into their website as mentioned above(or if standard converter website expose any APIs to utilize ) OR CTA on "View in Local Time" takes user to website like https://www.worldtimebuddy.com/est-to-ist-converter?pl=1&lid=5,30,1275339&h=5&date=2/26/2023|3&hf=1 to which we can pass date in URL itself.
Challenges we ran into
For Snap lensathon I misinterpreted the deadline due to which I gave up working on it, thinking it won't be possible to complete even basic prototype & didn't do any work almost half of the day but late night I realized there is still 1 full day left :D. So its a issue to keep figuring out hackathon exact Deadline-time in my local timezone. This gets cumbersome to some extent if participating or planning to do so in multiple hackathons. Also, in USA itself there can be timezone shift day-light saving ON/OFF(like we have schedule for this hackathon)- this is also issue for them. For such cases, settings should get automatically updated for those user with email notification sent, to inform the change.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
May be from somewhere around the globe someone able to submit their entry in a hackathon without misinterpreting deadline.
What we learned
Time is time but I understand my local time, so better I being shown hackathon deadline & schedule in my select local timezone.
What's next for Schedule/Deadline in my local time
Devpost's call with their development team :)
