Inspiration
We started with a simple observation: scent is powerful. It can take you back to a memory, shift your mood, or ground you in the present moment—but there’s no way to track or reflect on how smells affect us. That curiosity led to Scentiment, a mindful journaling app built around our most emotional sense.
What it does
Scentiment helps users log daily scents, associate them with moods, and reflect on emotional patterns over time. Users can rate intensity, pick a color that matches the scent, jot a quick note, or even add a photo or a song. Over time, they start to see trends, like how lavender might bring calm or how city smells drain their energy.
How we built it
We designed the app using Figma and mapped out the user journey from onboarding to scent logging to data reflection. Our team created wireframes for the core flow: onboarding quiz, daily scent log, emotion tagging, color wheel, and a profile dashboard.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was figuring out how to make scent, something intangible, feel trackable and engaging in a digital space. We explored different visual metaphors like mood wheels and scent maps. Another challenge was balancing flexibility with structure. We didn’t want to box users into a rigid format, while also providing them meaningful prompts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of how cohesive and thoughtful the design turned out in such a short time. The app feels personal and calming, while still being functional. We especially love how we translated an abstract concept (scent) into a tangible interface users can interact with daily. The onboarding flow and scent to emotion mapping are also highlights.
What we learned
We learned that people are more emotionally aware of scent than they realize, they just need a space to reflect on it. We also learned a lot about designing around the senses, and how to communicate mood and memory through color, layout, and interaction. Most of all, we learned how to take a niche concept and build something universally human from it.
What's next for Scentiment
We want to get more real world testing, get feedback from users and explore mobile development options. Future features could include a scent memory map, personalized scent recommendations, and integrations with smart diffusers or wearable tech. The dream is to make Scentiment a core part of digital wellness!
