Our inspiration for Scene stemmed from the impersonality that characterizes the static 2D images and videos that modern social media outlets and applications boast. Social media should be a platform for connecting others with each other and with current events around the world, but now, social media is characterized by monotonous scrolling and tedious reading. With the idea that social media should neither be read nor watched, we decided to create a virtual reality social media platform that allows users to experience media, not read it or watch it. With this inspiration in mind, we sought to produce a platform that is able to bridge the gap of impersonality and to allow users to once again connect with and interact with each other and events around the world on a more personal level.
What it does
Our project Scene is a completely VR integrated social media platform. With the ability to upload 360 VR images and thoroughly implement them into the platform, users are able to post more personal and meaningful images that characterize themselves and their experiences. With the use of an Oculus Quest, users are able to experience different social media and news pictures with a 360 picture. Like other social media, Scene also stores user information so that they can create a profile to share with others.
How we built it
We began by sketching some of the key screens we wanted to include in our product and then moved on to creating digital wireframes in Adobe XD. After adding color and including critical buttons for the user flow and functionality, we gathered 360 images to create the idea that users will actually experience
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge for us was definitely time. With such an innovative idea that incorporates Virtual Reality capabilities, we did not have enough time to create a personalized algorithm to produce recommendations and other video categories based on users’ history.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First and foremost, we are proud that we executed our idea into existence. It was very difficult to translate our idea onto paper. The idea of submerging users into an experience was especially difficult since we came across the problem of experiences showing up 2D. However, we were able to come up with a solution to our problem and work our way up from there.
What's next for Scene
The next step for Scene is to integrate different machine learning algorithms to personalize suggestions and home page feed for the user that we could not have due to the time constraint. In doing so, the user can experience a new social media platform in virtual reality.
