If you think back on any of your life’s most incredible experiences — visiting a new country; a meaningful moment with family and friends; watching your favorite band perform — all your sensory memories come back. It’s what you saw, heard, and felt in that moment, all around you. Those sensory experiences are a big part of what makes us human. Now, what if you could relive these moments whenever you want?
The promise of Virtual, Augmented and Mixed reality has always been enormous. Put on these goggles, go nowhere, and be transported anywhere. Throw off the shackles of the mundane through transportation to an altered state. Born of technology, virtual reality at its core is an organic experience. Yes, it’s man meets machine, but what happens is strictly within the mind.
In the past year, VR headsets finally reached the hands of the general users with the launch of devices such as the Oculus Quest and Oculus Go, and AR/MR headsets and technologies will follow. These collectively can be called as ‘immersive’ mediums. However, if general users are to get on board these potentially revolutionary mediums, it must be easier for them to create these immersive experiences. Too often, technology is intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. That’s where we come in.
Scapic, a platform for Virtual and Augmented reality experiences has announced the launch of its VR/AR platform in public beta, with a strong focus on simplicity and making these technologies accessible for everybody.
What it does
Scapic lets people create, share and explore immersive experiences. We’re a platform for building Virtual/Augmented/ Mixed Reality content easily.
Create: Scapic’s drag-and-drop editor makes it trivially simple to build immersive experiences from scratch in minutes. Start with Scenes, upload any of your own assets to make your experience, or use our library to help fill out your vision. Now, you can design immersive experiences filled with the sights, sounds and interactions you want to. We call these experiences as Scapes.
Share: Scapic is entirely built on the cloud. You can simply preview and share your Scapes as a URL. You can view a Scape right from your web browser and allow others to instantly jump into your experiences. VR & AR hardware provide the most immersive experience, but anyone will be able to access your experience without additional equipment, across traditional devices too. Every experience is just a link away, on all your devices.
Explore: Learn, suspend, tread, be. Be immersed in spheres of visuals. Move through content that surrounds you in the real world, or move through completely new virtual worlds. Don’t just see ideas, live them.
This means you can design an Immersive Experience (VR/AR/MR) in the same amount of time it takes to make a presentation in Powerpoint or pen a blog. People can now create experiences in hours – not days, weeks or months.
We think that people will use Scapic many purposes: presentations, product tours, sales tools, training, portfolios, location tours, brand marketing experiences, promotional experiences, educational content, galleries, Immersive experience prototyping, and more.
We believe in the Open Internet, and envision a future where the web is an immersive one. To that, we build products that help bring our vision of tomorrow, today
How we built it
The Scapic team is exceptionally young, and 10 members strong now. Almost all team members are < 24 years old. I think this gave us the audacity to think from ground up, and build on technologies that on the frontiers of tomorrow. We have a very hacker and Silicon Valley driven DNA in the team, and this keeps the enthusiasm about the big vision strong. Scapic is Founded by Sai Krishna V K and Ajay P V. Sai hails from Stanford GSB, and previously cofounded an AI startup and an Ed-Tech startup. Ajay has previously been a part of Gridraster Inc, a San Francisco based VR Startup and Cisco.
Challenges we ran into
Scapic is an incredibly simple platform for users to create and discover Virtual and Augmented reality experiences. It’s a cloud based editor that allows anyone to build VR & AR content, without the need code. Building deep technology product startups is a challenge in India, and at Scapic, we constantly found ourselves at the crossroads of a product-first approach versus distractive short term benefits. Since Virtual and Augmented Reality aren’t evolved verticals yet, sometimes even the relatively simple engineering tasks would end up taking days to crack. It is almost like the wild west of technology, where there are very few norms and rules. It is liberating to try pioneering a new space, but daunting to bring your vision to life.
What we learned
VR/AR/MR represents a technology communicating to us using the same language in which our consciousness experiences the world around us: the language of human experience. Pause on that for a moment. For the first time, we can construct or record — and then share — fundamental human experiences, using technology that stimulates our senses so close to a real-life experience, that our brain believes in the same. We call this ‘presence’. Suddenly the challenge is no longer suspending our disbelief — but remembering that what we’re experiencing isn’t real. With Scapic, you have the ability to make these immersive worlds, and we think it will enable the next wave of creators to build for these mediums.

What's next for Scapic
Over the years, the way we have interacted with computers have become more personal and direct. The natural evolution of the same is from instructions to GUI to now, spatial computing. This puts Scapics value proposition in the forefront of the next wave of computing interfaces in the form of VR/AR. Thus, the opportunity to address here is massive, and Scapic is poised to answer some of the core parts of the industry. The months ahead look to be some of the most exciting ones in the fields of VR/AR/MR with all major companies from Apple, Google, Samsung, Facebook and Microsoft having announced some very strong roadmaps for VR and AR to take off. When it does, content will matter. When content matters, Scapic would be at the heart of the content creation wave.
