Inspiration Many students look for internships and jobs online, and there are some who come across false opportunities from fake recruiters. These fake recruiters can offer a high salary, ask for information, or sometimes request the students to pay in order for the job. We wanted to create a tool for students. What it does Scam Shield AI is an AI powered job/internship scam detection platform to help students assess suspicious postings. A user can copy and paste a job posting, internship ad, or recruiting message into the app. Scam Shield AI looks for warning signs of scams in the input text, such as asking for money in advance, fake offers, dubious contact information, and red flag language. The platform offers a risk evaluation as well as an explication of the warning signs found to assist the user in making better choices. How we built it Scam Shield AI is being built as a web app with an easy-to-use, simple UI suitable for students. Our tech stack so far is supposed to use React for the frontend, a Python server, and text analysis and AI-assisted detection for suspicion patterns. We want the explanation of the risk rather than just the result to be understandable and we are looking to share safety tips that can be followed to check the recruiter and vacancy for yourself. Challenges we faced One of the biggest problems is identifying fraudulent offers from genuine work. We want to build a system that identifies these warning signs without mistakenly labelling a genuine job as suspicious. There needs to be nuance in the communication. Presentation of AI-generated assessments in a way that is valuable and readable for users, without burying the user in technical aspects. What we learned This project allows us to learn about AI-assisted text analysis, full-stack web design and coding, and ethical AI design. We are learning how to take a real-world issue and develop a workable solution with a focus on usability, reliability and safety for the user. What's next Increasing detection accuracy, new test cases, support for different recruitment messages and a community reporting feature for suspicious listings. Scam Shield AI is to help students navigate the online workforce more confidently and discerningly. It is designed as a risk-assessment tool, not as a failure to detect spam.
