Inspiration

Online scams are becoming increasingly difficult to recognize. Fraudulent messages can imitate trusted organizations, create a false sense of urgency, or persuade people to share sensitive information. Many people know they should be careful online, but they may not understand the warning signs behind a suspicious message or link.

We created ScamIntel AI to explore how artificial intelligence can make scam detection more accessible, understandable, and useful. Our goal is not just to label something as suspicious, but to help people understand why it may be dangerous.

What it does

ScamIntel AI is an AI-powered platform designed to help users analyze suspicious messages and URLs for potential scam indicators.

Our planned core features include:

  • Message Analysis: Examine suspicious text for common scam patterns, such as impersonation, urgent requests, suspicious payment instructions, and attempts to obtain sensitive information.
  • URL Risk Analysis: Examine URL characteristics and, where available, domain reputation data to identify potential phishing indicators.
  • Explainable Results: Present the warning signs behind an assessment so users can understand what triggered the analysis.
  • Risk Assessment: Communicate findings in clear categories while acknowledging uncertainty when the available evidence is insufficient.

ScamIntel AI is intended to support safer online decisions, not to guarantee that every scam will be detected or that every unflagged message is safe.

How we built it

ScamIntel AI is being developed by a two-person team with a focus on combining AI capabilities with practical cybersecurity techniques.

Our intended approach combines language-model analysis, structured detection rules, and URL or domain reputation checks where suitable data sources are available.

The platform is designed to transform a user's input into an understandable assessment, highlighting relevant warning signs instead of presenting an unexplained result.

We are focusing on building a functional end-to-end experience, from submitting suspicious content to receiving an assessment with supporting explanations. The final implementation and technology stack will reflect the components we successfully integrate into the project.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges is that scam detection is not always straightforward. Legitimate messages can appear suspicious, while sophisticated scams can look convincing and professional.

Another challenge is balancing AI flexibility with reliable detection. A language model can misunderstand context or produce unsupported conclusions, so its output needs to be handled carefully and supported by additional checks where possible.

We also need to consider privacy when processing potentially sensitive messages and avoid exposing users to dangerous websites during URL analysis.

These challenges shape our approach: prioritize explainable findings, handle uncertain cases honestly, and treat AI predictions as assessments rather than unquestionable facts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are working toward a tool that makes cybersecurity analysis more understandable for everyday users.

Our central goal is to combine multiple detection signals with clear explanations in one accessible interface. Rather than leaving users with a simple warning label, ScamIntel AI aims to help them recognize suspicious patterns and make more informed decisions.

As we implement and test the project, we will document the capabilities we complete, the technical decisions we make, and the results we can demonstrate.

What we learned

Through this project, we aim to deepen our understanding of AI integration, cybersecurity analysis, backend development, and building a useful product as a small team.

We are also learning that an effective AI application requires more than connecting a model to an interface. It requires thoughtful handling of uncertain results, careful evaluation, responsible data processing, and a clear explanation of the system's limitations.

We want ScamIntel AI to demonstrate how AI can complement established security techniques rather than replace them.

What's next for ScamIntel AI

Our next steps are to complete the core message and URL analysis workflows, evaluate the system against legitimate messages and known scam examples, and improve the quality of its explanations.

We also plan to explore broader language support, additional threat-intelligence integrations, and a more comprehensive library of scam patterns.

Ultimately, we want ScamIntel AI to help more people recognize potential online threats, understand the warning signs, and make safer decisions in an increasingly complex digital world.
