Inspiration
Standard AI assistants operate in isolation—once a session ends, all context, preferences, and progress are lost. We wanted to break free from stateless prompt-and-response interactions. ScalableAI was inspired by the goal of building a universal, omni-capable AI assistant that doesn't just process tasks, but actually remembers. By leveraging distributed agentic memory, we aimed to create an AI companion that learns, adapts, and evolves alongside the user across every interaction.
What it does
ScalableAI is a general-purpose, all-in-one AI assistant capable of executing any standard LLM function—from writing code, drafting content, and answering complex queries to data analysis and multi-step reasoning.
What sets ScalableAI apart is its persistent memory engine. Backed by CockroachDB on AWS, it securely stores and indexes conversation history, personal preferences, and task context across sessions. Instead of starting from scratch every time, ScalableAI retains state long-term, providing deeply personalized, context-aware responses without losing past details.
How we built it
- Database & Agentic Memory: We integrated CockroachDB as our resilient, distributed database layer to store long-term context, user memory nodes, and stateful session histories.
- Cloud & Compute: Hosted on AWS infrastructure to ensure high availability, low latency, and infinite scaling for agent interactions.
- AI Orchestration: Integrated LLM frameworks with custom context-retrieval pipelines to dynamically query CockroachDB before rendering responses.
Challenges we ran into
- Latency Optimization: Fetching past context from CockroachDB and injecting it into LLM context windows without introducing noticeable delay during real-time streaming.
- Memory Filtering & Relevance: Designing retrieval logic that extracts only the most pertinent historical memory nodes, preventing context window saturation and hallucinations.
- State Synchronization: Maintaining consistent agent state across distributed AWS nodes during concurrent sessions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully building a resilient, zero-data-loss agentic memory pipeline powered by CockroachDB.
- Demonstrating a truly seamless experience where the AI naturally recalls past user preferences, prior code snippets, and background context without manual re-prompting.
- Architecting an enterprise-ready foundation on AWS that can scale stateful AI interactions to thousands of concurrent users.
What we learned
- How to leverage CockroachDB's distributed architecture for high-performance AI memory storage.
- Techniques for prompt-context orchestration to balance short-term conversational context with long-term persistent memory.
- Best practices for designing stateful autonomous agent systems instead of traditional stateless chatbots.
What's next for ScalableAI
- Multi-Agent Collaboration: Enabling specialized AI agents to share a unified CockroachDB memory layer.
- Multimodal Memory: Expanding memory capabilities to index documents, images, and audio recordings.
- Granular User Memory Controls: Adding a visual user dashboard to view, search, edit, or purge specific stored memory entries for enhanced privacy and control.
