Inspiration

Speaking a new language takes more than knowing the right words. Learners need a place to practise out loud, hear natural speech, and understand what to improve. SayBay is built to make that practice approachable.

What it does

SayBay helps English learners practise real conversations. Learners listen to a conversation, choose a role, speak their lines, and receive pronunciation feedback. They can review individual sentences and use Fine Tune to work on specific words and sounds.

How I built it

The iOS app is built with SwiftUI. A TypeScript and Fastify backend handles the conversation catalog, practice progress, and assessment requests. Supabase provides authentication and storage; ElevenLabs supplies reference speech; and Speechace provides pronunciation assessment. The app also has a learning path and a catalog of 100 published conversations.

Challenges and what I learned

The hardest part was connecting a smooth speaking experience to audio playback, recording, assessment, and useful feedback. Building SayBay taught me how much care it takes to make pronunciation feedback understandable and to keep a learner’s progress reliable across a multi-turn conversation.
