Inspiration

Say Yes Buffalo needed to keep track of alumni employment via social media usage, so we helped incorporate a portal that works with their website and social media postings to keep track of their status and also help provide them with opportunities to get a job or internship.

What it does

Alumni can log in to their Say Yes Buffalo Alumni account to update their status and apply for new jobs listed on the page. If they click on a job application, a text box will appear asking them if they applied or not. If so, it will add their data to the job employement database so SYB can see that they are employed and also see their overall alumni statuses and what industries, companies, and positions their alumni are associated with. In addition, an automatic email will be sent 30-60 days after, asking them if they had gotten an interview for said position and if they got the job. If so, it will again update their data in the SYB database. SYB will be able to see infographics related to alumni employment data with their employee account's in the portal and can easily cite this data for use in grant applications.

How we built it

We built it mostly using Javascript.

Challenges we ran into

None of us were really experienced in front end development so it took a while to have a minimum viable product despite having a fully fleshed out idea that can be expanded upon to not only solve their main problem, but also help alumni and SYB in additional ways.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our idea and us being able to work as a team effectively. Also, our collective effort to try to challenge ourselves with front-end development.

What we learned

We learned a bit more about front-end development and also learned about SYB and how to help provide solutions under a limited resource environment and for educational purposes.

What's next for Say Yes Buffalo Alumni Connection Portal

If the idea were to be expanded upon, it could also include tools such as AI to personalize job listings for people based on interests and review resumes.
