Inspiration

Looking at the large amount of food that goes to waste in large establishments, we decided to develop a service that provides the additional food to those who are in need of it.

What it does

Our service records the additional amount of food present in restaurants, etc, using an IoT weight sensor. Using this, and a system of volunteers we aim to deliver this food to food banks, and individuals willing to pay a small amount for it.

How we built it

We built a website on GitHub using flask on html, python, javascript. The different profiles for the restaurants, volunteers and beneficiaries were developed separately for frontend and backend then integrated together. The maps were incorporated into the service using Google Maps API.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Working towards a social goal which was difficult to implement
  2. Trying to find incentives for users

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Making a google map from the API and finding the shortest path between the volunteer, food source and destination.
  2. Creating a platform for a social cause which makes it easier for all users to minimise food wastage

What we learned

It is great to have ideas and trying to help the world but the toughest part is to implement it and really help those in need.
