Inspiration
Restaurants and businesses are forced to throw out many unsold goods at the end of the day, leading to over 88.7 million tons of food being wasted annually in the US. The majority of food wasted could have been donated or saved for people facing food insecurity. Our community at Winston Salem is ranked 7th on the national list for food insecurity, and it could tremendously benefit from the reduction of food waste.
What it does
Savr aims to bridge the gap between food waste and food insecurity by connecting food banks and other nonprofits to local businesses. In doing so, Savr transfers food that previously would have been wasted, into the mouths of our community. By creating a network of local businesses and nonprofits, Savr allows communities to create their own unique system to combat food insecurity in their community.
How we built it
We used ReactNative, ExpoGo and Supabase.
Challenges we ran into
Our team was filled with people with packed schedules, so early on we decided to thoroughly plan out a roadmap for our progress in the project. We had to manually set up SQL Tables and the database and also manually code the authentication system for the app which was time consuming, so time management was crucial for our team.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is proud of seeing Savr come to life as an actual app we can install and interact with on our devices. Additionally, it is compatible across iOS and Android devices so no one is left out.
What we learned
We learned the importance of time management and communication in group cooperation. Many of our team members also diversified the amount of languages and platforms they can utilize as well as increasing the depth of our current knowledge.
What's next for Savr
Our team wants to add on verification system for nonprofits and businesses to ensure that fraudulent activity is prevented before launching the app to the public. Additionally, we can use AI to make the process more efficient, by implementing a scanning system to organize a massive database. We would ask nonprofits to provide information that would identify them as a nonprofit, and we would compare that information against the IRS database of non profits (tax exempt). We also want to work with more nonprofits and businesses to realistically implement the app for function.
