We knew the situation was silly, and what better way to solve a silly problem than a silly solution? Our inspiration came from cartoons as well as spy and superhero movies. I mean MDL man is certainly pulling a very cartoon move — with spy-like equipment!
With two hook bracelets concealed in his sleeves and a thin block concealed in his sock, he is able to cut himself free using a small knife in the block. The block which we call “The Hub” also has retractable bars from both sides and a sticky part protected by a removable liner. MDL Man sticks this bar up above the door of the room he’s locked in and hangs stress free as he waits for his perpetrators to enter looking for him.
To make it all parts were easily 3D printable and most of them fit together directly, with the two main halves of The Hub glued together.
We ran into many problems along the way, including sliding and rotating mechanisms not attaching properly, Inventor failing us at every edit (especially rendering animations and highlighting the correct features), and constant re-editing of offsets for moving parts.
We’re proud of our CAD model having all of he correct movements that we wanted, and the super flashy but very MDL Man design and colour scheme our design exhibits.
In the future we’d make it larger (since parameters really limited us) and definitely improve the attachment mechanism onto walls.
