Inspiration
We were inspired by our challenges to save money as a college student. We were thinking about how we can make a fun way for people, especially high school students who are just beginning to learn how to save money, to track their saving but also make them have an initiative to do so.
What it does
First, the user creates a savings category. There, they can pick the amount their desired savings goal, the goal date they want to save by, and the importance of this category. Every week or day they input the amount of money they plan to save and, based on the money inputted and the importance level, the user will earn points. The higher the importance, the more points they will get. The points can be used to take care of the hamster, for example feed the hamster. Every month you need to keep up with a certain amount of points or else the hamster will die, and you will have to pick a new pet.
How we built it
We used repl.it because it was an easy site for all of our group members to collaborate and work on it together. We also used a shared Figma to wireframe.
Challenges we ran into
First we were not able to develop and idea soon enough, and we also ran into challenges of figuring out what to use as a method to share our projects.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We feel accomplished that we actually made a minimum viable product website, and it works well enough that it exhibits the functions of the site.
What we learned
We learned how to use CSS and HTML, along with working in a team environment.
What's next for Saving Gold
Since not all the members had access to creating an iOS app, we decided to make a website first. We hope to later implement this as an app. We will also have options of what the user wants to grow or keep like different animals and plants, and more options to take care of it like exercise or grooming. We also want to add a personalization option for the pets, so the users could make the pets look like their own real-life ones, possibly inhibiting more motivation to save.
