Inspiration

The inspiration for SaveNest came from both personal experience and observation of the shared financial struggles faced by our peers. As young adults, we are overwhelmed by the complexities of managing finances. Splitting bills with friends, keeping track of expenses, and trying to save money for the future were daunting tasks. Traditional banking methods felt outdated and lacked the engagement our younger generation crave. We realised that there was a significant gap in the market for a solution that could simplify these processes and make managing finances more enjoyable.

Additionally, we were inspired by the success of Duolingo. Duolingo's gamified approach to language learning appeals to millions of users by making the learning process fun, engaging, and rewarding. We want to apply similar gamification principles to financial management. Meanwhile, we observed the weaknesses of Duolingo, such as its failure to retain users due to repetitive content and lack of personalisation. That is why we decided to focus on personalised savings challenges and adaptive content that evolves with the user's financial journey. With additional features that create a community atmosphere to encourage a sense of collaboration and support, we aim to keep users engaged.

What it does

SaveNest is a revolutionary digital payment and savings app initially tailored for Gen Z, combining modern financial management with engaging gamified features and social interactions. Users can effortlessly split bills, not only with friends but also with strangers. What sets SaveNest apart from other apps currently on the market is our user-centric design, and adaptive challenges and content. Users can participate in personalised savings challenges involving rewards and streak system, and enjoy a community-driven atmosphere that fosters good financial habits by participating in our social sharing features.

How we built it

We developed SaveNest using a combination of modern technologies and user-centered design principles:

  • Backend: Implemented with Java, handling data management and server-side logic, interfacing with Firebase for data storage. Streamline recommendation with Python.
  • Frontend: Developed using Swift to ensure a native and responsive iOS experience and Flutter for cross-platform consistency, focusing on an intuitive UX/UI that encourages frequent interaction.
  • Security and Compliance: Encrypted user data and transactions with spring security. Set rules on Firebase for data accessing.
  • Personalisation: In the future, we will employ machine learning and natural language processing algorithms to analyse user spending habits and tailor challenges that not only resonate with users' financial goals but also encourage sustainable habits.

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenge centred on understanding our target customers—primarily young individuals eager to manage their finances but dissatisfied with current tools. Through iterative processes, we identified their daily pain points. Initially, tracking daily deposit goals proved challenging as users found it rigid and monotonous. Further research and feedback highlighted that manual input significantly hindered user engagement. This realization prompted us to shift towards an automated solution with challenges linked directly to banks, which simplified the process and significantly enhanced user engagement. Acknowledging the critical role of user engagement, our next step involves integrating automatic transaction tracking to further improve user satisfaction and seamlessly streamline their interaction with financial data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

SaveNest has excelled in market research, analysing existing financial apps and even educational app like Duolingo to identify strengths and weaknesses. Insights from Duolingo's success in gamification and community engagement inspired our development of personalized savings challenges that evolve with users' financial journeys. Our innovative approach addresses gaps in current financial tools, ensuring dynamic and engaging content that enhances user motivation and retention. We are proud of integrating these insights into our design.

We are also proud of our ability to adapt and refine our solution based on real user feedback. This iterative design process helped us move from a basic concept to a more refined, user-centred product that promises not only to help users manage their finances but to actually enjoy the process. The integration of gamification and personalised challenges represents a significant innovation in the personal finance space, tailored to the lifestyles and preferences of younger generations.

What we learned

The journey taught us the importance of deeply understanding customer needs and the context in which they interact with financial products. We learned to apply the Value Proposition Canvas to our design process, ensuring that our features and functionalities align directly with user jobs, pains, and gains:

  • Jobs to be done: Our users need to manage their finances in a way that's both effective and engaging. They don't just want another tool; they want a solution that fits seamlessly into their daily lives and offers real-time feedback and support.

  • Pains: Users are frustrated by complex apps that require too much manual input and offer little in terms of motivation or rewards. They are looking for ways to bypass these blockers that make financial management feel like a chore.

  • Gains: Users appreciate features that offer convenience, such as automatic tracking and personalised insights. They value the social aspect of a community, a leaderboard, and the motivation provided by gamification elements, which transform tedious tasks into fun challenges.

What's next for SaveNest

While our primary focus is on Gen Z, SaveNest plans to evolve into an all-inclusive financial companion for the entire community. Our vision extends beyond simplifying financial management to becoming a comprehensive platform covering payments, investments, and savings. Future enhancements may include innovative features like time-based spending limits, personalised investment suggestions powered by AI, and interactive savings challenges.

We're committed to expanding our appeal by refining our features. Furthermore, we also plan to launch educational initiatives, collaborate with influencers, and host community events. By forging strategic partnerships with financial institutions and employers, we aim to reach a broader audience. SaveNest is not just about managing money; it's about transforming financial habits into a collaborative and rewarding journey, making it the preferred choice for individuals seeking financial empowerment and growth.
