Inspiration

This project was inspired by our experience as work-study college students working in the dining center and noticing the amount of food dumped daily. So, we thought that effective monitoring of the amount of food being produced and encouraging distribution to people in need could significantly contribute to eliminating food waste.

What it does

Our goal is to create a simple program that helps to eliminate food waste by alerting dining services and restaurants when there is a disproportion between the number of people and the amount of food made, advising them what to do. The program calculates the number of people in the dining center by keeping count of the number of students swiping their cards. The amount of food is estimated per plate produced and manually updated when more food is made. By comparing these data, the program sends 3 kinds of alerts: that there is more food than people and food production should be halted, that the number of people and amount of food is proportional, or that there are more people than food and more food is needed.

How we built it

We built this IOS app in Xcode using Swift. We also used CANVA for the logo and Figma for Design. We also have the prototype in Figma for a desktop view of the program.

Challenges we ran into

Since we are very new to programming with Swift it was challenging to implement some functions and features that we wanted to add.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we did it! Even though there is a lot more that we want to do, we're glad that we brought our ideas to life.

What we learned

The biggest thing that we learned through this project is how to learn to code.

What's next for SaveFood

We plan to add more features to the alerts like providing email hyperlinks of organizations that distribute food for easy access. We've already designed the website wireframe in Figma and we plan to develop it using React.
