Inspiration
Our team consists of four animal enthusiasts. With our shared passion for wildlife conservation, we brainstormed ideas that could leverage technology to help animals. Our ideas included an interactive map highlighting endangered species across the U.S., a platform for animal shelter adoptions, and a crowdfunding site for pets in need. Due to the constraint of limited time, we chose the first idea that is both impactful and achievable: creating a website to spotlight endangered species in each state.
What it does
Our project, SaveEndangeredAnimals, simplifies the journey of discovering and aiding endangered species in one's own backyard. By selecting a state, users can see a curated list of endangered animals, complete with images and names. This direct approach not only educates but also inspires action, culminating in a call-to-action button that connects users with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), fostering immediate opportunities for involvement.
How we built it
We used the ECOS Environmental Conservation Online System API, which hosts a comprehensive dataset of species managed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. We used React for our front end and Vercel for deployment.
Challenges we ran into
Working with the ECOS API was trickier than we thought it would be, but luckily, our team had a wide range of skills to draw on. From fixing bugs in the code to designing the look of the website, each of us had something different to contribute. This helped us get past any problems and finish our project on time.
What we learned
We realized that there are far more endangered species than we imagined. Beyond the iconic elephants and tigers often spotlighted in conservation efforts, we learned of countless birds, insects, and other animals facing extinction. This discovery was a stark reminder of the intricate web connecting human life to the natural world and the urgent need to protect these vulnerable species and their habitats. Moreover, each of us learned different technical skills. Some of us had our first exposure to React and some of us learned how to use REST API. We researched and learned different ways we can use to deploy the website.
