Inspiration
Inspired by classic point-and-click games like The Secret of Monkey Island and Kings' Quest V, we knew we wanted to do a smaller, less high stakes version of those. What's less stakes than saving a kingdom? Saving a village, of course.
What it does
A small, short game about a village potion maker helping the town guard protect the village. Click all around, find some snarky comments, and find the items you need to make your potions too. Keeps a curious player engaged through hints and tooltips, and the recipe book is there if you need a little guidance, too.
How we built it
Built with 3d assets modeled and textured in Blender, and rendered with a crunchy pixelated modifier to stay true to the retro pixel art feel.
Challenges we ran into
Mostly the time limit. The last day were were already feeling tired, but had to push through with caffeine and a few naps. We came right up against the submission deadline, but we got there in the end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We basically finished the game! Sure, it doesn't have audio, and there's an annoying bug related to how the mortar & pestle works, but it's done! There's a short little plot progression and lots of art assets got made.
What we learned
We could have gotten a lot more done if we worked more closely together instead of trusting that the other person knew what needed to get done, when, and how quickly. Also, timelines are important! We just jumped right in without really stopping to look at how much time we really had and how that would result in a finished game (or not).
What's next for Save The Village
I'd like to finish up a few little loose ends, fix a bug or two, add in one more potion recipe.
