Inspiration
We were interested in blockchain technology and web3 integration because it promotes decentralization and the power of the people. We wanted to employ the technology of the future to tackle modern problems by raising awareness. Possessing an interest in data science, we were inspired to plot every coral reef in existence on a world map.
What it does
Utilizing blockchain technology we were able to create our very own cryptocurrency based on DeSo, a Decentralized Social Blockchain for Crypto and NFTs. We also constructed a world map displaying almost a million data points of coral reefs. Adopting a domain name from domain.com, we created a website to display our results, which includes a link to our cryptocurrency and an interactive world map.
How we built it
We incorporated the Deso blockchain to create our cryptocurrency, Save the Seas. After buying our domain from domain.com we designed our website to display our findings. Using Juypter Notebook, Python, Datasets, and HTML, we created an interactive world map containing every coral reef known to exist.
Challenges we ran into
The dataset file, having almost a million entries, which totaled over 300 megabytes of data was inefficient and slow. With that problem, we found a creative so to compress that data drastically to a hundredth of that size without losing too much information! Implementing Twillo was quite difficult too because of the paywall. Despite finishing the code, we were unable to implement it due to the paywall.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our ability to problem-solve and compress the data within the interactive map. We were also incredibly proud of our UI and UX design along with our implementation of blockchain technology.
What we learned
We learned how to utilize blockchain technology and create a cryptocurrency. We enhanced our knowledge of data science through the creation of our map.
What's next for Save The Seas
We want to further enhance our cryptocurrency and detail our map to an even greater extent.
