Inspiration
71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. Now, imagine that all being polluted, greased and impure. This can cause so much damage to the environment, not only to the seaworld but also to humans and the Earth. Daily, 2 million tons of sewage and industrial and agricultural wastes are dumped into the world’s water (UN WWAP 2003) and about 784 million people do not have access to clean water. One simple step, amongst the many ways to reduce these numbers is by not disposing plastic waste as is, into the oceans. It can kill marine mammals directly, through ingestions or by being mistaken as food. Mammals are not only depleted, but also the life cycle of species is affected, which causes a huge impact on Earth and other species, including humans. By our project, we communicate this change. By not having wastes in the waters, we can have more sea lives, clean water and a balanced ecosystem.
What it does
Our game shows the scenario of a polluted sea. The underwater is dirty, filled with pollutants like plastic waste, dirt and much more. Due to this, sea life is depleting. We intend to make awareness that a simple step of not throwing such waste in the water can save the sea. In our game, when you click on the ‘save the sea’ button, it clears the pollutants and the sea life is revived. This small step can re-clean the waters. To give more information to the user, we have set a video by the UN on the matter.
How we built it
Our team used Google Docs to discuss and plan out the project. We decided to use Unity to build the AR scene and EchoAR to set the models. We used C# make a script to tweak the functionality and placement of models on the scene whilst keeping communicating together through Discord.
Challenges we ran into
Everything was new to us when going for this project so there were many challenges. One was understanding the way Unity worked with C# and also how to incorporate different models from EchoAR.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Firstly, we all learnt a lot about Echo AR and Unity in just 2 days. It is a new skill we all can work upon and explore more in the future. Secondly, while brainstorming, we learnt a lot about the scope there is in AR, and this game is just a start to what we can do.
What we learned
We were not very equipped with EchoAR and Unity, we learnt a lot about using these platforms. We learnt a lot about the current status of pollution in the world, and how the numbers have only increased over the years. We go back more aware and cautious about it, and intend to spread out more as a step towards clearer waters.
What's next for Save The Sea
We can do a lot more with Save The Sea. We can have more facts shown in it. Each creature can have an informative fact associated with it, which gives users more information about how it is impacted by littering and how they can save them. We can have more visual movements, and animated models, making it more appealing to the eye. Having it in a bigger space and making it look more realistic. Like an actual walk in the ocean, making it more impactful. We can have different versions, pollution is just not in water but also in the air and land. It will be a good tool for young kids to learn such important information at a young age, via a fun game.
